Huaisheng Mosque also known as the Guangta Mosque or Lighthouse Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in China dating back to the Tang Dynasty around 627 AD It was originally built by Saad ibn Abi Waqqas an uncle of Prophet Muhammad who came to China as an envoy The mosque features a unique 36meter high minaret called Guangta meaning Lighthouse which served as a navigation aid for ships on the Pearl River The architecture blends traditional Chinese temple design with Islamic elements creating a fascinating cultural fusion The mosque has been rebuilt several times throughout history but maintains its spiritual significance as an important center for Guangzhou Muslim community
