Saint Sophia Cathedral stands as one of Harbin's most iconic landmarks, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture that transports visitors to another era. Built in 1907 by Russian troops during the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway, this cathedral served as the spiritual center for the Russian community in Northeast China. The cathedral features a massive green dome surrounded by four smaller domes, all topped with golden crosses that gleam in the sunlight. Its red brick facade, intricate stone carvings, and arched windows create a majestic presence in the city center. After decades of serving various purposes including a warehouse during the Cultural Revolution, the cathedral was restored and converted into the Harbin Architecture Art Museum in 1997, preserving its historical and architectural significance while showcasing the city's multicultural heritage.
