Yu Garden also known as Yuyuan Garden is a famous classical Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai The garden was first built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father Pan En the minister of the Imperial Court The garden covers an area of 20,000 square meters and features traditional Chinese garden design elements including pavilions halls rockeries ponds and dragon walls The name Yu Garden means Garden of Happiness in Chinese reflecting its purpose as a place of peace and tranquility The garden is divided into six main scenic areas each with unique characteristics and architectural styles Visitors can admire the exquisite craftsmanship of Ming Dynasty garden architecture while experiencing the harmonious balance between artificial structures and natural elements that defines classical Chinese garden design
