Zhaozhou Bridge also known as Anji Bridge is the worlds oldest open spandrel stone segmental arch bridge located in Zhaoxian County about 40 kilometers southeast of Shijiazhuang Hebei Province Built between 595 and 605 AD during the Sui Dynasty this architectural marvel has stood for over 1400 years surviving numerous floods earthquakes and wars The bridge spans 502 meters with a main arch of 373 meters and was designed by the brilliant engineer Li Chun Its innovative design features four smaller arches on each side of the main arch which allow floodwaters to pass through reducing pressure on the structure The bridge represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese engineering and has influenced bridge construction worldwide for centuries
